Florence Richardson
Epithet: Bereaved mother
Record type: First World War Biographies
Biography: Florence Richardson, pictured with her husband Herbert, lived at Port E Vullen near Ramsey. Florence and Herbert lost three of their sons in the First World War: John Henry Richardson, George Kent Richardson and Sidney Parkinson Richardson. Today it is almost impossible to imagine the sheer number of bereaved parents in the 1920s and 30s. Many clung to a fierce pride in the sacrifice made by their children in the name of King and Empire, and in an odd way it was a source of comfort for some that so many other parents shared and understood their grief; for others, Armistice Day, and the two minutes silence in memory of the dead, were almost too painful to bear.
